From clearance to new planting
Each stage prepared the way for the next. Retained trees and shrubs form the framework of the restored landscape.
Vegetation clearance
Unsuitable trees and shrubs, old junipers, stumps and one standing tree remnant. Branch processing and timber handling.
Shrub thinning
Thinning the shrub layer, reducing yews, and rejuvenating and weeding Russian sage.
New planting
Shrubs and perennials planted into prepared growing medium, with fertiliser and watering. Prague Zoo supplied the plants.
Mulching planting beds
Spreading woodchip and crushed aggregate across prepared slope areas.
Meadow lawn
Soil levelling, raking, sowing a meadow mix, rolling and watering.
Water distribution
Excavations, pipework and six water outlets for connecting hoses and watering the new planting.
Clear the space and prepare the soil
Removing unsuitable trees and shrubs was followed by shrub pruning, branch processing and soil preparation.
The first stage removed unsuitable vegetation, old junipers and stumps, including backfilling the resulting holes. Woody material was loaded and moved to a designated location within the zoo.
Retained areas were then shrub-pruned and yews reduced. Russian sage was rejuvenated and weeded. Working on the slope required careful sequencing of material movements, excavations and final soil preparation.
New greenery from the roots up
We prepared planting positions and growing medium for shrubs and perennials, added fertiliser and watered them in. Prague Zoo supplied the plant material.
The restoration also included establishing meadow grass: soil surface preparation, raking, seeding, rolling and watering.
Mulch, planting and water close at hand
Woodchip and aggregate completed the prepared beds. Below ground, a water distribution system was added for irrigation.
Woodchip was spread over the prepared areas, with crushed aggregate in selected sections. The brief specified 400 m² of woodchip and 80 m² of aggregate, including the necessary material handling.
The irrigation water system included excavations, pipe laying and six outlets for connecting hoses. These allow planting to be watered from several points along the area.
