Getting a tree-work quote: photographs and essential details

Tree size is only part of the brief. Nearby buildings, fences, roads, overhead lines and the space available to handle timber also affect the method and scope. Good information shows the whole working area, not just the trunk.

The essentials

Photograph the tree and surroundings, describe access, and explain what should happen to the trunk, branches and stump. Check the required documents before agreeing the work.

Show the whole tree and its surroundings

An overview should show the crown, trunk, nearby buildings, fences and roads. If obstacles are not clear from one position, add a second view. A close-up of the trunk or damage is useful, but cannot replace an overview.

Include the species and approximate height if known; label uncertain information as an estimate. Do not take risks measuring the tree or approach a visibly damaged tree just to obtain a quote.

Describe the surroundings and handling space

  • The town or village and the tree's position on the site.
  • The entrance, narrowest access point and space for machinery.
  • Nearby buildings, fences, overhead lines, roads and other obstacles.
  • Any need to access neighbouring land.
  • Operational restrictions and space to store material.

A tree in an open space needs a different assessment from one between a building and overhead lines. The method for complex tree dismantling is chosen by the contractor to suit the site, not from a photograph of another project.

Explain what should remain after the work

Should the trunk be cut into sections and left on site, the branches chipped, or everything taken away? Include the clean-up you expect and any stump removal. On the Tuhaň–Kly cycle route, we had to cut up and move large trunks after felling.

Felling a tree does not automatically remove its roots. If a lawn, planting or construction will follow, mention this in your enquiry. For help planning the next stages, see our guide to stump grinding or extraction.

Check the required paperwork before work starts

Trees growing outside woodland may require permission or a different procedure depending on the circumstances. Calling a tree “dead” or “self-seeded” does not resolve all the requirements. Smaller trees and shrubs can also be subject to specific rules.

You will find more detail and official links in our guide to tree-felling permission. Check any uncertainty with the relevant nature conservation authority. Tell us which documents you already have and what still needs arranging.

Compare the complete outcome, not just the cutting rate

A unit rate does not capture securing the work area, the technical method, material handling, waste removal or follow-on work. Compare quotes with the same scope and final condition.

For an initial assessment, send photographs of the whole tree and obstacles, the location, access details and your requirements for the timber, branches and stump. If the information does not establish the scope, a site visit is needed. An incomplete view of the crown cannot confirm the method or final price.

Frequently asked questions

Is a photograph of the trunk enough for a quote?

No. We need to see the whole tree, including the crown and surrounding obstacles, ideally from several suitable angles.

Does tree felling include stump removal?

Not automatically. The stump, root ball, waste removal and final surface preparation need to be specified separately.

Is a dead or self-seeded tree automatically exempt from permission?

No. That description alone does not determine the applicable procedure. Check the required documents and site-specific circumstances with the relevant nature conservation authority.
