Restoring a wildlife corridor at Holý vrch
At Holý vrch, we restored a wildlife corridor on a very steep, overgrown slope. Machinery access was limited, and gathering branches proved as challenging as clearing the scrub.

Access determined the approach
Clearing the growth was only part of the task. There was little room for machinery, and branches could not be gathered just anywhere. Every stage had to account for access to the next section.
- Very steep slopes
- Limited access
- Gathering branches
From dense growth to an open slope
An open hillside gives nature space
Holý vrch belongs to the European Natura 2000 network. Its protected habitats include dry grasslands, oak-hornbeam woodland and thermophilous oak woodland. Their varied mosaic supports a rich environment for plants and animals.
We had to work particularly carefully because protected species occur in the grassland and woody vegetation. Scrub removal required close attention to the vegetation designated for retention.
The management plan provides for restoring steppe areas with scattered trees and shrubs. Our work opened an overgrown strip between trees, even on this difficult-to-access slope, restoring a functional wildlife corridor.
Small details. Lasting value.
Open spaces, thriving meadows and trees preserved for wildlife.

Wildflowers on open slopes
Rare plants
AOPK records species here including yellow flax, snowdrop anemone and autumn gentian.

Life in the meadows
Space for invertebrates
The management plan promotes open meadow vegetation and support for invertebrates.

A home in the canopy and tree hollows
Trees as refuges
Old and hollow trees have an important place in site management as habitats for birds and insects.
